A boy ran through the halls of Oxford university's archeology wing, dodging through fellow students and his peers who constantly yelled at him to slow down. But there was no slowing Corby down now, he had a paper down and god forbid he allowed it to be late. He figured Professor Shaw would be forgiving, but he didn't want to chance it.
The halls were deserted as he rounded the corner to Professor Shaw's class, but he could hear the sound of his professors voice. "Mhm, o course I understand. Ye had better not be lying to me..... I know what they bloody look like, remember, I was bloody there. Mhm... And I be telling you that these are fake. David, I don't care, these are not the swords I found. I want my shipment, or you will be sorry, Savvy?" she growled. The slamming of a phone could be heard as Jackson sneaked closer.
Jackson popped his head into Ana's class and stared at his professor. "Um, 'scuse me Ms Shaw, but I have my paper" he said softly, holding up a stack of papers. Ana's head snapped towards the door and stared at the young man. "Mr Corby, how long have you been standing there?" she asked softly.
The young man stuttered, trying to find something to say. "So you heard my conversation" she said with a faint laugh. "Don't worry lad you've done nothing wrong. Come in, come in" she smiled, waving him in.
Jackson walked in slowly, approaching the young woman who stood before a large wooden crate filled with straw and swords. "...'scuse me Ma'am, but may I ask what these are?" he said softly. Ana looked at the boy. "swords Lad. Those two weeks off I had, I was down in Barbados at a dig" she smiled. "But it would seem, my aid has tried to stiff me on my finds yet again" she laughed, but her mirth was cut short.
"ANA BOWES!" a man screamed. "lad, get down" Ana whispered to Jackson. The young man ducked below her desk and covered his head.
5 armed men burst into the room, their pistols all pointed at Ana. "Thought you could hide from us, did you? You dirty pirate whore" the leader growled at her.
Ana looked at the men, raising her hands slowly. "Now Tony, how did ye find me? And really, shouldn't we take this business else where?" she asked. Ana didn't want to get her student involved in this.
Jackson was confused. What was going on? why on earth were these men after his teacher? He peeked through the bottom of the desk. Damn! They had guns! Not to mention they had called her by a different last name....did they have the wrong person? But she had identified the man who burst in, they had to know each other.
Tony laughed. "You wish. Give us the necklace and die quietly, then we'll leave". Ana shook her head. "I won't give you anything" she said simply. "Wrong answer" tony growled. Guns fired. Ana dived for the desk. "Jackson, we need to run" she said softly, drawing a pistol from the leather brief case under her desk. "On the count of three, we run for it" she said with a grin. "One.....two....Three!" Ana yelled. She popped up and fired a few rounds at the men, grabbed Jackson's hand and dashed for the window. Ana threw herself at the glass, dragging A terrified Jackson behind her. They hit the ground, grunting in pain. Ana was up quickly and resumed running, Jackson following closely behind her. "PROFESSOR WHATS GOING ON?" he yelled as he ran, following the woman to her car.
She turned to him and smiled weakly. "I'll explain once we get somewhere safer" she said softly as she drove off.
Hours later Jackson had been filled in on Ana's life. He looked at her, everything still sinking in. "So, let me get this straight. You are the pirate captain Analora Bowes. You are being kept alive by a cursed necklace and you are searching for a magical item to take you back to your own time" Jackson said softly, looking at the cup of tea in his hands. Ana nodded. "Mhm, thats about the gist of it" she smiled.
A few long moments passed. "Am I the only one who knows?" Jackson asked. Ana nodded again. "My only student, yes. There are a few others who know who I am. Professor Ferguson knows as well" she smiled.
Jackson smiled as he set the sword back up on his mantel. Every time he looked at the weapon he thought of Ana. She was like his mentor, little sister, and best friend all in one person. He smiled once more then returned to his cleaning.
