Past Life(Prior to search for knowledge) –
Syl and Kai were born to and raised by a poor Japanese family in Montreal. Their mother and father own a small restaurant in the city, and while not astoundingly popular, earned them enough money to live on and support a family. Their parents had left behind much of the Japanese tradition, wanting the kids to choose for themselves what they wanted to believe in. Hence why Syl and Kai haven’t had much contact with Japanese culture.
From an early age, Syl showed an inquisitive and curious spirit, often wandering off into places where he shouldn’t have. To make it worse, he was frequently teased in school for being different, and for having strange (albeit temporary) interests and hobbies. Kai took note of this, and immediately stepped in. At first he was beaten down, but eventually learned how to fight better to protect his sibling. As he grew stronger, he also became more aggressive, picking fights with anyone that would even so much as touch a hair on his brother’s head. Syl, of course, could only look on, horrified, at the fights, but glad that his brother was there for him.
Still, as Syl was the younger sibling, his parents favoured him, and devoted more attention to him. Kai didn’t mind, and while they did have some degree of sibling rivalry, they generally got along quite well. Syl helping out with the housework and with the family business, Kai looking out for Syl and working in minimum wage jobs to help support the family. Asides from the numerous fights on Kai’s part (almost resulting in him getting expelled from high school), and Kai’s discovery of hacking in his early teens, their childhood was relatively uneventful.
The same tendencies stuck throughout the years – Syl and Kai only growing closer as the years went by, following each other where they could. The main problem was that while Syl could make friends easily, Kai was still bent on ensuring his safety as always, and his zeal at it often pushed people away. This resulted in Kai having few friends, as he valued independence over social connections. When it came time for Kai to go to college, their parents decided to send him to the US for studies. Syl soon followed, as their parents had enough common sense not to send him to school alone.
Their parents contacted a friend that lived nearby, and negotiated a deal. Their sons would live in one of the apartments, and they would work to pay the rent. Not much longer, Syl and Kai arrived and began their studies at school. Kai soon became one of the top students in his class, while his brother was frequently on the verge of failing. In fact, if it wasn’t for Kai’s help (and tutoring), Syl’s grades would be ridiculously low. No one could explain why the two of them were so different, why Syl cared so little for school. Kai, needless to say, was as vicious as ever in protecting him, picking up the habit of using cell phones to keep in touch.
Two years ago, after Kai had graduated college, he began to look for work… something more paying than minimum wage jobs. Short on money (due the rent and his job not paying very well), Kai needed money… fast! One day, he would pawn off their treasured family heirloom for money at a pawn shop. However, something strange happened when the pawn shop owner was inspecting it… something that would change Kai’s life forever.
Physical appearance – Kai stands at 5’9’’ and like his brother, is rather thin and lean due to not eating much. He has an Asian appearance, with short, black hair and dark eyes and a fashion sense similar to Syl’s. Resembles his brother a lot.
